On August 14, 2025, on the eve of the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Christians around the world will observe the World Day of Prayer and Fasting for Peace. The Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, called on the faithful to join this international spiritual initiative.

August 14: World Day of Prayer and Fasting for Peace — His Beatitude Sviatoslav Urges: “Live It with Particular Depth”

“This week marks the end of the Dormition Fast. On August 14, the whole world will observe the World Day of Prayer and Fasting for Peace in the World,” said His Beatitude Sviatoslav at the end of the Liturgy at the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in Kyiv on Sunday, August 10.

“I invite all of you—all the faithful of our Church and all people of good will—to live the last day of the Dormition Fast, a day of prayer and fasting for peace, with particular depth and seriousness,” the Primate said.

“We believe that the Lord will hear those who fast, pray, and work, and will be with us, helping us to survive and victoriously end this unjust war,” affirmed His Beatitude Sviatoslav.

The World Day of Fasting and Prayer for Peace will be held on the initiative of the International Union of Superiors General (UISG) on the eve of the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On this day, special prayers will be offered for countries and regions where wars and humanitarian crises are ongoing: Gaza, Sudan, Ukraine, Haiti, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Syria, and Myanmar.
