Consecration of Melbourne’s Syro-Malabar Cathedral unites Eastern Catholic Churches of Australia in prayer
On Saturday, November 23, Bishop Mykola Bychok, Eparch of Melbourne, participated in the consecration of the Cathedral Church of St. Alphonsa of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church in Melbourne.
The Syro-Malabar Catholic Church is one of the largest Eastern Catholic Churches, preserving its unique rite and traditions. In Australia, this community has been growing steadily for over a decade, particularly after the establishment of the Diocese of St. Thomas the Apostle in 2013. This diocese, the second of its kind outside India, underscores the significance of the Syro-Malabar community within the global Catholic Church.
The construction of the Cathedral, which spanned 12 years, was made possible through the dedication and support of approximately 550 families.
The Divine Liturgy was led by Archbishop Raphael Thattil, head of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church and Major Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly. The celebration was attended by clergy, members of the local community, and government officials. Bishop Mykola was accompanied by Fr. Andriy Mykytyuk, Synkellos for the Laity of the Melbourne Eparchy.
On the eve of this historic event, Bishop Mykola met with Archbishop Raphael Tattil during a gala dinner. Their meeting provided an opportunity for sincere dialogue. Archbishop Raphael, upon learning that Bishop Mykola represents the UGCC, shared memories of his student years in Rome, where he had the privilege of interacting with Patriarch Josyf Slipyj. He also expressed his support for Ukraine, offering heartfelt prayers for peace and the well-being of the Ukrainian people.
