Father Andriy Khimyak ordained a bishop in the Patriarchal Cathedral
On Saturday, February 18, 2023, at the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in Kyiv, Fr. Andriy Khimyak was ordained as a bishop by the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, being elected Auxiliary Bishop of the Kyiv Archeparchy. This rite was performed by His Beatitude Sviatoslav, the Father and Head of the UGCC, together with Bishop Bohdan Dziurakh, Apostolic Exarch in Germany and Scandinavia, and Bishop Stepan Sus, Bishop of the Curia of the Kyiv-Halych Major Archdiocese. The nominee Bishop Andriy was accompanied by Fr. Yuriy Chudiak and Fr. Oleh Panchyniak.
In the beginning, Fr. Oleh Oleksa, Secretary of the Father and Head of the UGCC, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, read two decrees of the Head of the UGCC: The decree of the proclamation of Fr. Andriy Khimyak as Bishop of the UGCC and the decree of naming him Auxiliary Bishop of the Kyiv Archeparchy.
“You will carry out the episcopal ministry as an auxiliary bishop to the diocesan bishop of the Kyiv Archeparchy of the UGCC… It is Kyiv, as the capital of a free and independent Ukraine, in which our Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ was built, that has become an unbreakable bastion of our freedom and identity. We ask the merciful Lord Jesus Christ to strengthen and maintain you and the faithful of the Kyiv Archeparchy in the ordeals ahead. May God’s just peace come to our land through your prayers and service!” the naming decree reads.
Then the newly named Bishop Andriy proclaimed his profession of faith and, laying his hand on the Gospel, took oaths of fidelity to the Holy Father Francis, the Father and Head of the UGCC, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, and their successors.
The rite ended with a prayer to the Holy Spirit for the new bishop of our Church.
Afterward, Bishop-nominee Andriy served the Great Vespers.
