“God has not forsaken Ukraine”: a book conversation with His Beatitude Sviatoslav, written during the war, presented in Warsaw
On February 23, 2023, Warsaw, the capital of Poland, hosted the presentation of the book “God Has Not Forsaken Ukraine,” written based on a conversation between Krzysztof Tomasik, a journalist of the Catholic Information Agency, and the Father and Head of the UGCC, His Beatitude Sviatoslav. In October 2022, Mr. Tomasik went with the Head of the Church on a pastoral trip to the frontline zone in southern Ukraine, from where he brought several hours of conversations that later turned into a book.
The book was published by the most prominent Catholic publishing house in Poland, WAM (Publishing House of the Apostolate of Prayer). Stanisław Budzik,Archbishopof theMetropolitan Archdiocese ofLublin, and Professor Daniel Rothfeld of the University of Warsaw wrote the foreword.
The book’s co-author, Krzysztof Tomasik, a KAI (Katolicka Agencja Informacyjna)journalist, spoke about the intent to write it, how it was created, and what subjects are most important to him as an author. “In our conversation, we tried to show that there is sense beyond nonsense, that any wounds are healed, that every word has power, and that everyone can become a part of saving the world despite all the absurdities, frustrations, and disappointments,” Krzysztof Tomasik said.
“The purpose of the book is to give hope,” Mr. Tomasik emphasized and added: “Every aid we provide to Ukraine is a sign of great hope for bringing a quick end to the war, peace, and thus the reconstruction of the country.”
He said that part of the proceeds from the book’s sales would be donated to the “Relief and Hope” foundation of the Sisters Servants in Pralkivtsi near Przemysl, which takes care of war orphans in Ukraine.
His Beatitude Sviatoslav, who took part in the presentation via video conference, spoke about the meaning of the title of the publication and where Ukrainians get their strength to continue fighting.
“If we briefly summarize how we survived this year of full-scale war, the biggest war in Europe since World War II, the book’s title speaks for itself — God did not forsake Ukraine. Indeed, God has not forsaken us! Therefore, we thank Him that we are alive,” said the head of the UGCC.
Блаженніший Святослав, який взяв участь у презентації через відеозв’язок, розповів про сенс назви видання і те, звідки українці беруть силу, щоби продовжувати боротися.
“Якщо коротко підсумувати, як ми пережили цей рік повномасштабної війни, найбільшої війни у Європі після Другої світової, то назва книжки говорить сама за себе — Бог не покинув Україну. Направду, Бог не залишив нас! … Ми дякуємо Йому, що живі”, — сказав Глава УГКЦ.
Ця книжка, на його переконання, справді історичний документ, адже має чітко визначений час, обставини, дуже конкретну політичну, військову, гуманітарну ситуацію України жовтня 2022 року.
Блаженніший Святослав зазначив, що Кшиштоф Томасік дуже відважний чоловік, бо приїхав в Україну в дуже небезпечний час — 14 жовтня, у День захисника України, коли існувала загроза ворожих обстрілів. “Цього дня ми виїхали з Києва до Одеси і не знали, чи повернемося назад живими. Тоді найбільша військова ескалація була там, на Півдні. Ми бачили Одесу, заміноване Чорне море, загороджені пляжі, одеський порт. Бачили вантажні машини, які везли зерно і тижнями чекали на можливість експортувати його морським шляхом до країн, які потребували хліба. Бачили наших єпископів, священників, монашество і людей, які не мали що їсти. Пан Кшиштоф бачив, як ми роздавали гуманітарну допомогу. Пам’ятаю, жінка з Херсонщини розповіла, що все життя працювала на землі, годувала інших, а тепер сама у храмі просить куска хліба…” — розповів Глава Церкви.

Він пригадав, як владика Михайло Бубній, екзарх Одеський, зауваживши, що після візиту Глави Церкви на Харківщину було звільнено Харків, просив поблагословити Херсонщину, щоб і її вдалося звільнити. “Кшиштофе, сьогодні Херсон вільний, — ствердив Блаженніший Святослав. — Чи це не свідчення, що Бог із нами?! Перемогти можна тільки з Богом. Від Нього походить сила, щоб усе це витримати”.
“Що давало нам силу пережити цей рік? Не знаю достеменно, але переконаний, що, коли людина відповідає на своє покликання, Бог дарується їй. Коли ми, як люди, реалізовуємо своє покликання бути людьми, Бог виходить нам назустріч. Присутність Бога робить нас людьми навіть в обставинах війни. Я завжди запитував: що означає бути християнином у час війни? Сила молитви, Євхаристія, Слово Боже для нас були і є світлом. А ще: що означає бути єпископом, католицьким єпископом, у час війни? І Кшиштоф був свідком того, наскільки люди потребують духовних осіб, єпископів, щоб бути разом із ними. Часом не можемо нічого зробити, але можемо бути поруч, зокрема там, де розпинають Ісуса. Я мав таке відчуття, коли відвідував поранених воїнів у Южноукраїнську, що доторкаючись їхніх ран, я торкав ран самого Ісуса, відкритих у тілі нашого народу”, — поділився Патріарх і подякував п. Томасікові за те, що “приїхав і був свідком нашого болю та нашої надії”, а також усім полякам за солідарність.
“Сила молитви і солідарності сильніша від російської військової техніки. Це братерство і солідарність дає нам надію, що як Бог не покинув нас у цьому році, так не покине і в наступному. З Богом всюди добре, навіть на війні. Християни мають обов’язок вказати на Бога, особливо у воєнних обставинах. А бути єпископом у час війни — це бути знаком присутності того Бога, який нас не покидає”, — додав на завершення свого слова Блаженніший Святослав.
На запитання про місію України в сучасному світі, Глава УГКЦ відповів, що вона полягає в тому, щоб показати, зокрема країнам пострадянського простору, що бути свобідною людиною можливо. Бути вільною людиною означає робити добро.
This book, in his opinion, is a genuinely historical document because it has a clearly defined time, circumstances, and a very specific political, military, and humanitarian situation in Ukraine in October 2022.
His Beatitude Sviatoslav noted that Krzysztof Tomasik is a courageous man because he came to Ukraine at a hazardous time — October 14, on the Day of the Defender of Ukraine, when there was a threat of enemy shelling.
“What gave us the strength to survive this year? It is hard to say, but I am convinced that God gives himself to them when a person responds to their vocation. When we, as human beings, realize our vocation to be human, God comes to meet us. The presence of God makes us human, even in the circumstances of war. So I have always asked myself: what does it mean to be a Christian in times of war? The power of prayer, the Eucharist, and the Word of God was and is light for us. And also: what does it mean to be a bishop, a Catholic bishop, in time of war? And Krzysztof witnessed how much people need clergy, bishops, to be with them,” the Patriarch shared and thanked Mr. Tomasik for “coming and witnessing our pain and our hope” and all Poles for their solidarity.
When asked about the mission of Ukraine in the modern world, the Head of the UGCC said that it is to demonstrate, in particular to the countries of the post-Soviet space, that it is possible to be a free person. To be a free person means to do good.
