On September 28, St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv hosted a presentation of the modern Ukrainian translation of the Bible, which has been in the works for over 25 years.

Modern Ukrainian Translation of the Bible Presented in Kyiv

The work of the Ukrainian Bible Society, led by Hryhoriy Komendant, was accomplished in cooperation with the Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant Churches of Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church was represented at the ceremony by Fr. Oleksa Petriv, Head of the Department of External Relations of the UGCC in Ukraine, Fr. Mykola Sulyma, Chancellor of the Patriarchal Curia of the UGCC and Member of the central department of the Ukrainian Bible Society, and Fr. Ihor Shaban, Chairman of the UGCC Commission on Interfaith and Interreligious Relations.

In his speech, Fr. Oleksa Petriv, first of all, conveyed greetings from the Father and Head of the UGCC, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, who recently had the opportunity to pray for Ukraine on the island of Patmos (Greece) in the Cave of the Apocalypse, where the Apostle John received the Revelation, the last book of the Bible.

“I express my gratitude to everyone who has been working on this enormous titanic work over the years… For the goal and purpose, if you view this event through secular eyes, are the same — the formation, strengthening and development of our beloved Motherland. It is common worldwide for peoples who are alive, who are moving forward with their heads held high towards a better future, to periodically publish a new translation of the Bible in their language. Today, we have joined the ranks of those living peoples.”
