"Рідна Школа" Visits Basilian Legacy Room
Three classes, taught by Irina Galai, from "Рідна Школа" visited the Basilian Legacy Room on December 7, 2024. Sr. Ann Laszok, OSBM shared the history and ministries of the Sisters of St. Basil the Great here in Philadelphia, PA and in the USA.
The students learned about Metropolitan Andrew Sheptytsky and Bishop Soter Ortynsky's influence in bringing the Sisters from Yavoriv, Ukraine to Philadelphia. The students heard how the Sisters opened an orphanage, a school, a printing house and a "riznytschia" (a vestment making room) to support and educate orphaned girls and boys at first.
Sr. Ann explained the various beautiful cultural articles handmade by the Sisters and displayed in the cases: e.g. embroirdered vestments, gerdany, pysanky as well as the initial publications of prayerbooks and Missionary magazine, icons and relics. Upon leaving the students were quizzed on what they heard and correct answers were rewarded with a prize.
