Transformer Ramp for People with Disabilities Installed at the Garrison Church in Lviv
The Garrison Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul of the UGCC in Lviv will be the first church in the city to be equipped with a transforming ramp, providing easier access for people with disabilities. This is an important step toward creating a barrier-free environment, allowing people in wheelchairs to enter the church without assistance.
The ramp, which is set to be installed before the New Year, features an innovative design: at the push of a button, the stairs convert into a platform that rises to the floor level of the temple. The platform is designed for wheelchair users, ensuring their safety with special backrests. The church doors open automatically through motion sensors, providing effortless access.
“The ramp is designed so that people in wheelchairs can access the church independently,” said Father Taras Mykhalchuk, rector of the Garrison Church.
The solution for the ramp was found in Denmark, as installing a traditional ramp was not feasible due to the conditions of the city’s central area. As Fr. Taras explained, the transformer system solves the problem without disrupting the church’s structure, preserving its authenticity.
This is not the first initiative by the Garrison Church to improve accessibility. A few years ago, a tactile model of the church for the blind was installed, allowing them to learn about the shrine through touch and Braille.
