The modern administrative-territorial districts of the Stryi eparchy have a Christian historical past. Today part of the Mykolaiv, Horodok, and Stryi districts belongs to Przemyśl — Sambir eparchy. Another bigger part of the modern Mykolaiv, Horodok, Stryi, and Zhydachiv districts was part of the eparchy of Lviv. A small part of the parishes of Peremyshlany related to the Stanislaviv eparchy.
Due to the accession of the western regions of Ukraine to the USSR in 1939, part of the eparchy of Przemyśl with the episcopal capital in Przemyśl became part of the Polish People’s Republic, and the other part, Sambir, became part of the USSR.
With the establishment of the border in 1945, the regions were reallocated. In 1946, on the territory of the Drohobych region, the Russian Orthodox Church created the eparchy of Drohobysh-Sambir as a successor of the ancient Przemyśl eparchy or rather Sambir part of it.

The Decree (Prot. № Р 2000/840) of the Head of the UGCC His Beatitude Lubomyr Husar proclaimed the establishment of the eparchy of Stryi of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. Five districts of the Lviv region became part of the eparchy. They are Stryi, Zhydachiv, Horodok, Peremyshliany, and Mykolaiv districts.
By a decree (Prot. № Р 2000/798) the Head of the UGCC His Beatitude Lubomyr Husar appointed the Reverend Bishop Julian Gbur as a Bishop of the Stryi eparchy.
On January 20, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI assigned bishop Taras Senkiv as an Apostolic Administrator ad nutum Sanctae Sedis of the eparchy of Stryi of the UGCC.
On April 2, 2014, Pope Francis, considering the decision of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, agreed to the canonical election of Bishop Taras Senkiv as Eparch of Stryj.
