On May 11, at the parish of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Kryvyi Rih, a unique shelter called “Pechera” (“The Cave”) was officially opened. It is a safe and comfortable space for children and their parents, created through fruitful collaboration between the parish and various charitable organizations and foundations. The shelter was consecrated and blessed by Bishop Maksym Ryabukha, Exarch of Donetsk.

The press service of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church parish in Kryvyi Rih shared the news.

Bishop Maksym Ryabukha presided over the service and blessed “Pechera,” emphasizing the spiritual significance of the event. During his sermon, he explained the name of the shelter in deeply symbolic terms: “We Christians all know one cave that totally changed the life of all humanity: from extremely complicated to very lovely and dear to God. And this cave is the cave of Christ’s Nativity. In fact, this is the place where God’s presence has remained with people forever.”

“From the moment we stepped through the front doors, we felt how cozy it is inside. Cozy — meaning it feels just like home. It’s truly nice, tidy, welcoming, bright, and filled with fun games. Everything here tells us, ‘We are loved,’” the bishop said.

Bishop Maksym also highlighted the mission of “Pechera”: “Our shelter is the space where we live. Many important events, meetings, educational activities, and peaceful moments will take place here—all kinds of things. And when the war ends, this shelter will continue to serve us.”

The opening was accompanied by a lively program for children. Animators led fun activities, children participated in science experiments, and those who wished could have their faces painted. A library and a collection of board games were also presented. The rector of the parish, Father Ivan Talaylo, along with other UGCC clergy, took an active part in the blessing and opening of the space.
