“God always takes the side of those who suffer innocently and unjustly”: His Beatitude Sviatoslav
God the Creator is always present in human suffering. His Beatitude Sviatoslav, the Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, said this in a pre-Christmas interview with Pryamyi TV channel, answering the question, “Who does God stand for today?”
According to Ms. Natalia Fitsych, who had a conversation with the Head of the UGCC, amidst the brutal war, people often contemplate whose side God is on today because Russians, like Ukrainians, are Christians who pray to the Lord God in the same way.
The Head of the UGCC noted that we, Christians believe in the crucified God, the One who willingly took on human suffering and was innocently condemned by humanity. “God the Creator is present in human suffering,” the Primate emphasized.
Furthermore, His Beatitude Sviatoslav assured that God is present in the midst of the suffering today, particularly in Ukraine. The Primate emphasized that God is condemned to death once again, embodied in the Ukrainian people whose right to exist is being deprived of. God is, once more, wounded and crucified as Russian missiles, bombs, and drones rain down on the innocent women and children, cities, and villages of Ukraine.
“When visiting our wounded soldiers, I often look at a wounded body and say: ‘Jesus, is it You? Are you here?’” said the Head of the UGCC, and added: “I feel the suffering of our God in the body of the Ukrainian people. It is a profound and mystical feeling that God does not abandon us. We are not forgotten.’’
