Head of the UGCC on the 145th Week of the War: The World Must Recognize the Holodomor Tragedy to Stop the Murderous Breath of Red Moscow

On this Day of Remembrance of the Innocently Murdered, I want us all to remember the Ukrainian global slogan once again: “We remember, the world recognizes.” His Beatitude Sviatoslav, the Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, emphasized this in his traditional military video message on the 145th week of the devastating war.

The Primate noted that, according to various experts, this horrific war has escalated to a new level, particularly on the Feast of the Entrance of the Blessed Virgin Mary, when Russia fired a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile at the city of Dnipro.

“The enemy is not just destroying our cities and villages, but also blackmailing the whole world with its allegedly newest weapons. The only way the enemy can defend its arguments is by spreading fear. Today, Ukraine says to everyone: do not be afraid! I was also there on that day when those missiles struck Dnipro. And I say to you: ‘Do not be afraid!’

Last week, on November 21, Ukraine celebrated the Day of Dignity and Freedom. We remembered the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred, the Orange Revolution heroes, and the students of the Revolution on Granite. And on November 23, we commemorated the victims of the Holodomor-Genocide of 1932–1933.

“These two holidays,” the Head of the Church believes, “united this week, tell us: on these two holidays combined, we are reminded that surrendering dignity and freedom in exchange for a well-fed life, can lead to tragedy as in the Holodomor. By depriving Ukrainians of their freedom and secure statehood, the Stalinist regime starved millions of our brothers and sisters to death, yielding one of the best harvests on Ukraine’s black soil.”

“We remember,” the Ukrainian leader continued, “that the genocidal ideologies that are attacking us today will never spread again, and the world must recognize this tragedy to ensure that it does not happen again in other countries, that the murderous breath of red Moscow does not claim lives anywhere else ever again. In the context of this week’s tragic events, we speak to the whole world: Ukraine stands, Ukraine fights, Ukraine prays!”.

His Beatitude Sviatoslav said that this week a historic event took place in the life of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church — a new ruling bishop, Bishop Maksym Ryabukha, was installed as the new exarch of the Donetsk Exarchate in frontline Zaporizhzhia. The Donetsk Exarchate is the territory of Ukraine where the war is now raging, through which a fiery tornado of destruction, death and depopulation is sweeping.

“This event uplifted us. We saw the faces of those sad people shining. Zaporizhzhia, where this event took place, seems to have gained a new breath of life,” the Head of the UGCC summarized.
