His Beatitude Sviatoslav Proclaimed the UGCC Menologion Approved by the Synod
The Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, proclaimed the updated Menologion of the UGCC, which was approved at the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, held in Rome on September 3–13, 2023.
The Decree of Proclamation and the UGCC Menologion was published on October 17 on the official website of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
“Having completed the procedure prescribed by law in accordance with the norm of can. 112 of the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches, we, with the authority vested in us, proclaim the Menologion of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and resolve to implement it within two months from the date of electronic publication of this legislative document on the official website of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (ugcc.ua),” the decree reads.
Bishop Andriy Khimyak, Secretary of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, in a commentary to the Information Department of the UGCC, said that several important factors facilitated the renewal: the need to include in the Menologion the new martyrs, each of whom received their own special day, and the saints who are revered by our people, as well as the need to unify the three official calendars, which had some differences.
According to the Secretary of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, the calendar will include translations of certain Greek names with their equivalents in Ukrainian to allow the faithful to celebrate these days with reverence. Furthermore, in accordance with the particular law, some holidays, along with their respective pre-feast and post-feast days, have been modified.
The Menologion is a list of fixed feasts and days of remembrance of saints and blessed people honored in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church during the liturgical (church) year, which begins on September 1.
