New Initiative to Highlight Women’s Role in the Church Launches March 22, 2025

On March 22, 2025, the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia will launch a new initiative aimed at recognizing the role of women in the Church, fostering dialogue, and establishing a platform for professional growth, experience-sharing, and mutual support. This initiative seeks to empower women both within and beyond the Church by providing opportunities for personal and professional development.

New Initiative to Highlight Women’s Role in the Church Launches March 22, 2025

The Second Vatican Council, which took place during a period of profound social change, served as a catalyst for the Church to reconsider the role of women in both society and ecclesiastical life. This process has gained momentum, particularly during Pope Francis’s papacy, with increasing efforts to involve women more actively in ministry, establish new commissions, and promote greater inclusion at various levels within the Church.

Within the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), discussions on the role of women are still in their early stages. However, a strong foundation has already been laid—women have been studying theology at the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) for over 30 years and are among the first to take on service roles within the Church.

The initiative’s pilot year will focus on three key areas:

  • Analytical Materials — Monthly publications featuring theological and historical research on women’s roles in the Church, along with interviews with women serving in the UGCC and reviews of books and films with religious themes.
  • Video Interviews — A series of conversations with Ukrainian women who play significant roles in Church life and public service.
  • Seminar-Retreat — A three-day event dedicated to discussing women’s presence in the Church, fostering community, and encouraging shared experiences.

The project invites theologians, psychologists, clergy, nuns, and active women of the UGCC to participate.

“The goal is not only to provide an informational resource but also to create a space where women can come together in their service to God and society,” says project initiator Halyna Vasylytsia.

The initiative will launch in March, a month symbolizing women’s solidarity, drawing inspiration from the biblical meeting of Mary and Elizabeth—a powerful example of mutual support and service.

Stay tuned for updates and join this important initiative!
