The Head of the UGCC meets with the Prime Minister of Ukraine

On Thursday, February 9, the Father and Head of the UGCC, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, met with the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal. The meeting took place in the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.

The head of the Ukrainian government congratulated the Head of the UGCC on the crucial decision of the Church to switch to a new style for fixed feasts. According to him, society does request and support it. He emphasized that this is a step that “takes us closer to the civilized world.”

The parties discussed pressing issues of cooperation in times of war. The Prime Minister thanked the Head of the UGCC for his dedicated service to Ukraine and continuous humanitarian assistance to Ukrainians who found themselves in dire straits.

His Beatitude Sviatoslav noted that Ukrainian people would face a long period of healing the wounds of the war and told Mr. Shmyhal that this is one of the priorities of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church for the next decade. As emphasized, cooperation between the Church and the state will play an essential role in this process.

Furthermore, the Head of the UGCC discussed with the Prime Minister the formation and development of the military chaplaincy institute in Ukraine and the importance of collaborative efforts in the international arena, mainly in relations with the Vatican.
