The Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Week 240 of the War: Preserving Humanity in Such Circumstances Is Also a Victory
“I would like to address our international friends and partners in particular: please support the struggle for humanity in Ukraine.” This was stated by His Beatitude Sviatoslav, Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, in his traditional video address during the 240th week of Russia’s brutal, violent, and sacrilegious war against Ukraine.
As the Primate noted, this was a week when the Russians terrorized our peaceful cities and villages day and night, while our Armed Forces stood night and day to protect human life. Moreover, they are driving the enemy from Ukrainian soil, liberating our lands from the occupier’s murderous grip.
At the same time, this week will be particularly remembered for the Russians’ daily attacks on the vital infrastructure of our cities and villages.
“What is particularly appalling is that the Russians consistently carry out so-called ‘double strikes’: when a strike claims lives and destroys our cities and villages, medical workers and rescue teams immediately arrive at the scene. And then a second strike is launched at the very same spot—with the aim of eliminating those who came to save lives,” noted the Head of the Church.
“Therefore,” he added, “today we realize with increasing clarity that preserving our humanity in such circumstances is also a victory. Preserving our humanity—perhaps that is precisely the goal of our struggle today.”
According to him, in such circumstances, we see that Russia is waging war not only against the Ukrainian state and its infrastructure, but also against human dignity itself. Civilians become targets. The wounded and those who have suffered are reduced to mere statistics. Fear and human exhaustion are weaponized.
