Head of the UGCC in Week 230 of the War: We Have Adopted the Fundamental Law That Will Guide Our Church Both in Ukraine and Throughout the World
The adoption of the Code is a sign of the UGCC’s maturity, evidence that it has taken yet another decisive step in the development of its patriarchal structures and the affirmation of its patriarchal dignity. His Beatitude Sviatoslav, Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, spoke about this in his traditional video address on the 230th week of Russia’s full-scale invasion of peaceful Ukrainian soil.
“These have been two hundred and thirty weeks of heroic struggle, prayer, solidarity, and the manifestation of great love for the Motherland, one’s people, and those most in need,” the Primate noted.
According to His Beatitude Sviatoslav, last week was once again violent for Ukraine. The enemy, perhaps taking advantage of gaps in Ukraine’s air defenses, continues to kill people every night… “Our entire Church, the entire Synod of Bishops, which met this week in Zarvanytsia, united in prayer for those who were innocently killed,” he said.
At the same time, the Head of the Church also announced some good news: “First and foremost, we are grateful to the Lord God and the Armed Forces of Ukraine for helping our people stand firm this week. We have received good news from the front: the Russian military’s offensive activity and ability to advance have been reduced by nearly fourfold. Our soldiers are bravely defending their country.”

According to him, a particularly significant historical event for the Synod of the UGCC was that for two days the bishops worked on the Church’s principal legislative document — the Code of Canons of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, which summarizes the millennia-long canonical history of the Kyiv Church’s development—from the earliest ecclesiastical texts and decisions of local councils over the past millennium to contemporary legislative and administrative acts.
His Beatitude Sviatoslav expressed his gratitude to all those who had worked on this historic document over the past 10 years: “We have adopted the fundamental law by which our Church will live, not only in Ukraine but throughout the world.”

This year’s Synod of Bishops concluded with a nationwide pilgrimage to Zarvanytsia.
“Zarvanytsia is a special spiritual center of our Church, which we call the home of the Mother of God in Ukraine. Here, we prayed above all for peace, for Ukraine’s victory, and for the swiftest possible end to this sacrilegious war,” added the spiritual leader of the Ukrainians.
