Today, the Ukrainian Catholic University is a potent tool for the service of our Church: for its people, its state, and the struggle for the victory of Ukraine. UCU is not just another educational institution at the top level of universities. It is the core of the transformation and strength of the Ukrainian nation. His Beatitude Sviatoslav, Father and Head of the UGCC and Grand Chancellor of UCU, said this during the UCU Charity Evening held in Kyiv on December 2.

“Today, UCU serves as a potent tool for our Church,” His Beatitude Sviatoslav at the UCU Charity Evening

In his welcoming speech, His Beatitude, Sviatoslav outlined the secret of the resilience of Ukrainians. He emphasized the importance of UCU as an instrument of service for our Church and the recovery of human souls wounded by war.

“Our university is a unique community of intellectuals, philanthropists, scholars, students, and alumni who are truly changing our society. In times of war, it is very important to unite friends, to create a space of mutual support,” said the Primate.

“The secret of the resilience of Ukrainians is that we are together; we reinforce each other. Solidarity and charity are the key to our invincibility because we share our strength, energy, dreams, skills, and resources,” the Patriarch said.

According to him, UCU Rector Taras Dobko clearly outlined the vision of the Ukrainian victory — the de-occupation of the territories. “But not only this,” the Head of the Church continued, “said we need to rehabilitate human souls wounded by this war and occupation. It is important to have secure borders, and even more important is to create a space of life so that the Ukrainian family is not afraid to give birth to new sons and daughters in Ukraine.”

“During the discussion, I was very pleased to listen to my student and today, a soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Andriy Andrushkiv, who spoke a lot about the need for radical reforms. These two words, ‘radical reforms,’ which sound from the lips of a UCU graduate, a military man, make us think about how to act in the future,” said the Grand Chancellor of UCU.

“The charity event is a unique venue for gathering people with thought-provoking ideas. It is not just a club of dreamers but a community of people who know how to realize what they dream of. Today, together, we are realizing the dream of UCU,” added His Beatitude Sviatoslav.

The centerpiece of this year’s charity event was a panel discussion entitled “How Can Ukraine Grow Its Wings?” in which representatives of UCU, the Armed Forces, and businesses participated.
